Three Macleans College students, William Han Year 12 (Upham), Jasmine Zhang Year 11 (Hillary) and Rick Han Year 10 (Snell) recently competed in the Australian Mathematical Olympiad.

They had been invited to sit this competition as they have been selected for the New Zealand International Mathematical Olympiad training squad, which is comprised of the top 13 students nationwide. In Australia, the competition is also invitation only and normally 100 of the top students sit it.

The competition was one of three competitions used to select the final team of six students that will represent New Zealand at the International Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Romania in July. The team is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

In the competition William obtained a perfect score and a Gold medal. He was the first person from New Zealand to obtain a perfect score in this competition. Jasmine obtained a Honourable Mention which meant she achieved full marks for at least one question without obtaining a medal. Rick obtained a Bronze Medal, placing him in the top half of the competition.
